After dropping their debut album last year, The RARE OCCASIONS have returned with a new single titled "Control." The catchy indie banger discusses the ongoing crisis in Xinjiang, China involving the government’s mass detention and erasure of the Uighur minority in that region. The Los Angeles-based indie rock group lays down a simmering groove which builds to a fiery head as the band portrays the region’s hushed violence. “Control” will be released on November 14th and available everywhere you stream music.

With this song, The Rare Occasions hope to shine a light on the injustices perpetrated by those in power, both large and small. “Considering the scale of it, we were surprised at how little Xinjiang was being talked about. We had this angry-sounding tune, and the music just really connected with what we were reading as it was developing.”

This is the first song the band has released since reforming as a three-piece. “It sits at the threshold between our old sound and our new sound: bigger, weirder, and more colorful,” says lead singer Brian McLaughlin. The band has spent the past several months working on new material in their own DIY space. “Everything from the initial songwriting and rehearsals to recording and the mix was done by us here in the small bungalow we rent, so the whole thing was a very organic and personal process.”

Known for their explosive sound and piercing lyrics, The Rare Occasions have taken on a fiercely independent stance in their music, recording and producing the songs themselves in their cramped rehearsal space. Their music delivers themes of existentialism and self-reflection, from buzzing highs to sulking lows, in concise yet unforgettable packages. The Rare Occasions are in the final stages of recording their next LP for a release in 2020.
