A note from Steve:
In 1968, when Dr. King was taken from the world and hope was in doubt, we kept marching. In 2020, we’re marching louder, longer and more collectively than ever before. We’re keeping the dreams and hopes alive for a just and peaceful society. We are all created equal.
Mix Master Mike and Steve Jordan bring you Beat Odyssey 2020 (August 28, Jay-Vee Records), a cinematic, improvised album, recorded live with turntables and drums, without sequencers or loops. “We would play live, and just have these explosions,” describes Steve. “We were on fire.”
The duo is sharing the first song, “The Gospel,” dedicated to all the non-violent protestors this year, with a video that documents peaceful protests in America.
“In a world of deception, we need a frequency to guide us all through,” adds Mike, who uses his turntable to get a gospel choir to speak in tongues. “Welcome to “The Gospel.”
The current protests run deep for Steve, whose father was part of The March on Washington in 1963, where he heard Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. “In 1968, when Dr. King was taken from the world and hope was in doubt, we kept marching,” says Steve. “In 2020, we’re marching louder, longer and more collectively than ever before. We’re keeping the dreams and hopes alive for a just and peaceful society. We are all created equal.”
Steve and Mike met in 2014, when Jordan was music-directing the Emmy awards. He felt the orchestra needed a turntablist. “Mike freakin’ blew my head off,” remembers Steve. “I had never heard anyone do what he did before, on such a musical level. He invigorated the entire orchestra.” Jordan credits the duo’s melodic improvisation to their shared knowledge of jazz. “Mike can pull up a Lee Morgan vibe, or a thing inspired by some of my favorite musicians and composers.”
Mike adds, “We have our own formula, without even talking about it.”
