Christmas albums can be like musical fruitcake – sickeningly sweet, filled with the same stuff year after year, but still an obligatory Yule tradition.

Memphis Ukulele Band took on that challenge with a new recipe that brings their unique “ukulele soul” to a seven-song set of seasonal evergreens, deep-catalog classics and two new Christmas  originals. The resulting EP – “Holidays Ain’t the Same” –  sure ain’t the same auld lang syne.

MUB’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut introduced “ukulele soul” – mixing the warm, intimate acoustic tones of ukuleles – soprano, concert, tenor, baritone and bass – played by a group of accomplished Memphis musicians featuring three lead singers, including the luminous voice of newcomer Kyndle McMahan. With award-winning singer-songwriter Mark Edgar Stuart, singer/multi-instrumentalist Jason Freeman, rhythm master Jon Hornyak and uke-shredding soloist Logan Hanna, the new collection expands on that first album with a tighter, more focused band sound. That’s the biggest reason this holiday EP ain't the same.

Check the opener, Memphis Soul Queen Carla Thomas’ Stax classic, “Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas” and the Charles Brown classic “Merry Christmas Baby” and you’ll see why this is not just a another Christmas album.  Two new, soon to be classics are the soulful  “Merry Christmas Broken Hearts” and “Holidays Ain’t The Same (Without You).”  No ukulele Christmas album would be complete without the wonderful “Mele Kalikimaka” (Merry Christmas in Hawaiian.)
New songs, old favorites, deep-catalog classics and more than a few surprises, all wrapped in a warm family feeling and that unique MUB “ukulele soul” sound. “Holidays’ Ain’t the Same” is one Christmas album you won’t want to put away come New Year’s.
