Josean Jacobo & Tumbao comes into being as a result of the concern to expose the musical ideas, compositions and arrangements of pianist Josean Jacobo after returning from Berklee College of Music.

The group, which started playing traditional Latin Jazz, has been in constant evolution since it was created in 2005, passing through Latin Jazz Nouveau to becoming the most important standard bearer of the "Afro Dominican Jazz" movement, whose mission is to have the Dominican folkloric rhythms be known around the world.

The result is: BALSIÉ

The always restless Jacobo is very studious and respectful of the great Afro-descendent rhythmic richness of the Dominican Republic, incorporating them into his compositions as a way to make them known today while preserving them for future generations.

Balsié takes us on a sonorous journey through the identity of the Dominican people and their culture, adding into jazz some of the most relevant rhythms of their land and roots. He visits some precarious communities where the folkloric manifestations remain the soul of its inhabitants. By using rhythms such as "Pri Pri", "Sarandunga", "Gagá", "Congos", "Palo s or Atabales" and "Mangulina". These rhythms, supported by the use of their corresponding folkloric instruments, contribute different colours and nuances to the world of Jazz and Latin Jazz.

This production not only invites one to get acquainted and to enjoy jazz in a new and fresh direction with well thought and developed compositions, excellent musicians – those that form the group, as well as the guests-, noting that the constant and successful exploration and incorporation of Josean Jacobo & Tumbao´s idioms embellishes and contributes to the rich lexicon of jazz through its fusions with the varied rhythmic richness of his country; but as well it should not be missing in any record collection that contemplates Latin Jazz, Jazz with Afro-Caribbean accents, jazz with the colours of Quisqueya: Afro-Dominican Jazz!
