What people are saying about Father John Misty’s God’s Favorite Customer:
"Extraordinary" – NPR Music

"Tillman’s gift for melody and his penchant for droll, evocative lyrics pull these 10 songs back from the brink of morbidity. There’s less of the Elton-meets-Nilsson ’70s pop vibe here, but the music here sticks thanks to smart arrangements that mix piano and guitar with occasional string parts." [8/10] – PASTE

"An enigmatic heartache album… His eloquence is matched, as always, by sublime melodies." [Album of the Week, ****] – The Daily Mail

"He has the ear of Jeff Lynne and the vowels of Elton John as he casts his words into the sky and lets them hang there to be marveled at, plainspoken and myth-free."

"An album this good is its own happy ending…" – Variety

"As prolific as Tillman has been, he’s remained surprising and tough to pin down; at times his cult of personality has run the risk of overwhelming his talents. But on this album the biggest surprise is discovering just how tender he can be. You don’t have to be in on the joke to appreciate it." – Time

"The music is lush, and Tillman’s voice is as wonderful as ever, clear and true, warm and approachable." [****] – The Guardian

"An album of unwavering candour… Josh Tillman appears to have tucked away his untouchable alter ego in favour of something altogether more human." [****] – The i Paper

"Dazed, blitzed out and rousing, the Father’s make–up is powerfully echoed in the massive, swooning odes of his fourth album."  [****] – The Mirror

"Personal, heartfelt and haunting… The creative roll continues." [****] – The Sun

"He has the ear of Jeff Lynne and the vowels of Elton John as he casts his words into the sky and lets them hang there to be marveled at, plainspoken and myth-free. There are no Misty prerequisites required in order to be shot through the heart… They are lonesome songs, honest because of their nature not because of their pretext." [Best New Music, 8.5/10] – Pitchfork

"A rich tapestry of AM-radio jangle and strum, threaded with songbook ballads like the rueful opener "Hangout at the Gallows" and pretty, plaintive "Just Dumb Enough to Try" [Grade: A-] – Entertainment Weekly

"This is the same Josh Tillman you’ve known all these years, albeit one who’s shifting gears while retaining both his characteristic wit and his unique way with a melody." [9/10] – Pop Matters

"His most personally revealing album yet… A heady journey through excess, absurdity and 21st–century mores from arguably the world’s most eloquent singer–songwriter." [****] – Q

"Given the nature of the album, it feels almost crass to point out that Tillman pulled it off again. But he did, in making another stunning Father John Misty album." – Stereogum

**** – MOJO

"Blurring the lines between artist and alter-ego and trading humour for heartbreak on a concise record that’s as sombre as it is satisfying." [8/10] – Exclaim!

"Working again with producer Jonathan Wilson, as well as Jonathan Rado of Foxygen, Tillman has wandered into the bruised-and-battered wing of ’70s singer-songwriter pop, the terrain where Harvestrecedes into Tonight’s The Night." – Uproxx

"It really is glorious… There is little artifice here, no witty asides; It’s blinding at times, and that’s what makes this journey so exciting." [****, Album of the Month] – Uncut

"Utterly beautiful… Father John Misty delivers a record that’s on another level." [*****] – DORK

"Father John Misty the character shouldn’t distract from Father John Misty the songwriter. The obvious truth is they go together. God’s Favorite Customer is a 10-track demonstration that when bleakness and fun can be married this well, wanting it any other way is churlish." [8/10] – Under the Radar

"God’s Favorite Customeris his most succinct effort yet, rarely ever breaking from the album’s overall narrative…As always, his most brutally honest lyrics are his most profound." – Consequence of Sound

"What lifts God’s Favorite Customer beyond homage is Tillman’s slicing, free-associative candor as he examines the cost in sanity and constancy of his craft and touring life." [4/5] – Rolling Stone

"…He’s never been better than on God’s Favorite Customer[4/4] – USA Today

"…The intimacy and honesty results in some of Tillman’s most stunning songwriting" [Grade: B+]- AV Club
