As anyone who studies the marriage of art and commerce knows, the most popular music genre is "anything with beautiful people and a good beat". Accordingly, the members of City in the Clouds decided to assemble a band based on that philosophy. Whether or not they meet the "beautiful people" threshold is debatable, but the "good beat" qualification is on point.

Based in Princeton, NJ and NYC, the band is comprised of brothers Jackson and Brendan Marquardt, Luke London, and Marcus Grey. Previously, the Marquardt brothers worked with REM producer Mitch Easter and toured the US and UK with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

Recorded at LaLa Mansion in Tampa, FL and produced by Drew Boullianne, the band’s debut album, The Contents of Box 212, features a wide range of genres throughout its 12 hook-driven tunes, which include elements of jangle pop, funk, surf rock, hip-hop, pop-punk, and reggae.

"Out to Lunch" (7) best exemplifies the album’s Gorillaz-inspired genre blending. The track, which features vocals and lyrics by guest rapper Mak Twain, juxtaposes bass-driven, reggae-inspired rap verses with a bright chorus characterized by jangly R.E.M.-esque guitar arpeggios and Beach Boys-influenced vocal harmonies. The song will be supported by a satirical animated video (in production) featuring Donald Trump rapping in his private jet. "Dirty Dan," on the other hand, showcases the emo and pop-punk sides of the band with edgy guitars, an eager dance beat, and a pretty great sex moan. And "Shower Thoughts" is a warm combination of hip-hop, surf rock, and jangle pop with rap verses penned and performed by R.J. Paige.

The album is tied together musically by Brendan Marquardt’s bouncy and laid-back drumbeats, Jackson Marquardt’s intimate vocal delivery and punchy guitar riffs, Luke London’s lush and funky guitar experimentation, and Marcus Grey’s bright, groovy keyboard and trumpet parts.

Ads for a fictional company (CloudyCity, Inc) orient the songs around the three meals of the day, and the lyrics of the songs represent desires and fears felt over the course of a day. The songs cover a range of topic such as the Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando ("Circulation"), the ego of Donald Trump ("Out To Lunch"), the family dinner table ("Down To Earth"), the apocalypse ("To the Sky"), and waking up with a hangover ("Shine").
