Rosanne Cash calls "By Degrees", a new song from Mark Erelli,  "the most compassionate, vivid and non-preaching anti-gun violence song I’ve ever heard—it’s a heart opener.” That endorsement inspired Cash, along with Sheryl Crow, Lori McKenna, Anais Mitchell, and Josh Ritter to join forces with Erelli on the charity single "By Degrees" available everywhere for streaming or download on October 19th. Erelli has partnered with former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords' organization, and 100% of the proceeds from the song will go to her group Giffords: Courage To Fight Gun Violence to support its efforts to tackle our gun violence epidemic. Everyone associated with this project has donated their time and resources at no charge.

In an era where ‘truth isn’t truth’ and the integrity of the press is regularly impugned by the highest officials in the land, it’s difficult to agree on what the issues are, let alone address them in song. “We’re staring at our phones instead of connecting with the real world, staking out partisan positions and yelling at each other on talk shows,” notes Erelli. “Meanwhile, there are very real problems that demand solutions, but our degraded discourse really prevents consensus and compromise.”

One listen to “By Degrees” and it’s hard to not get chills, or feel a little sobered by the challenges that face our society. “I think Mark’s song really captures what people from many different backgrounds are feeling about gun violence in America. How did we get here? How do we explain this to our children,” questions Anais Mitchell. “I hold out hope that the tide is turning, that we can and will come together as a nation and demand legislative solutions, that we can truly tell our kids ‘we’re working on this.'"
