Fionn – Fionn
Impact date: 6/25
The Horns are Fake
Fionn’s Alanna and Brianne Finn-Morris might be young, but don’t let that fool you. The 19-year-old twins from White Rock, British Columbia, have been singing together for most of their lives, forging folk-pop sound centred around the sort of telepathically tight vocal harmonies that only siblings could deliver. Lyrics that deliver both sharp social commentary and poignantly personal reflections are backed by arrangements that range from lushly orchestrated balladry to roots-rock. At the heart of it all, the intertwined voices of Alanna and Brianne sparkle, singing songs that suggest an old, wise soul dwells behind Fionn’s fresh faces.
Recorded over several months at 604 Studios in Vancouver, Fionn’s self-titled debut album draws influence from a wide array of artists and genres, from classic singer-songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell to contemporary pop icons such as Lana Del Rey and Lorde. Alanna and Brianne’s carefully crafted lyrics explore themes of feminism and female body image, while also uncovering deeply personal introspection. Songs like "Magazine Face" and "Skeleton" challenge the notion that a woman’s value is inherently connected to her physical appearance. Others, such as "Robert" and "Castles", are thoughtful personal reflections on love, loss, and happiness.
"Really the record is about the shattering of our reality and finding out life isn’t the way it was painted by school teachers and Hollywood movies", says Brianne.
The resulting album is a journey of self-exploration that is both broadly relatable and uninhibitedly personal.
Fionn’s self-titled debut album is due out in September.
